Hello, lovely ladies! Navigating the makeup world at any time brings its unique challenges, especially as our skin evolves with age. Let's dive into some essential tips and product recommendations for enjoying lightweight makeup this summer.

Understanding Mature Skin and Summer Needs

Mature skin requires special attention, particularly when it comes to hydration and avoiding products that accentuate fine lines and wrinkles.

If you’ve read any of my posts lately, you know I’m not the biggest fan of foundation as I’ve grown older. First of all, there’s these lines, that everything seems to sink into and are pronounced even louder than before. But summertime in the deep south is a bit of a conundrum. It’s inevitability can be frustrating.

I know I have to protect and nourish my skin, but I can’t stand wearing all that heavy moisturizer underneath a heavy foundation. It’s just going to slide right off my face and onto my blouse! It’s bad enough when the hair that’s all of a sudden frizzy sticks to my forehead, I already look like a wild woman in distress! But the day often dictates that I wear some sort of foundation. And that can spin me up like a hot flash in the middle of a humid heat wave. I have shared before that I sometimes mix my moisturizer with a foundation to thin it down and hydrate more, but it’s already getting warm in Charleston. That's not going to work for me from now until October.

Choosing the Right Products for Daytime

After cleansing, I’ve learned to go light in the morning, with moisturizers, serums and the like. I use the heavier moisturizer in the evening, and my Violette FR Boum Boum Milk - All Over Cream Spray in the morning. It has everything my skin needs for the day, being a 3-in-1 Toner, Serum and Moisturizer.

Skincare Essentials for Summer

And of course, I select a high-SPF sunscreen designed for facial wear. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid and niacinamide, which help retain moisture and improve the skin’s elasticity, making it look firm and youthful. There's so many good ones, here's a link to Glamour's Newsletter who has 19 of the best listed. I've tried a lot of them and it really depends on whether you want just the sunscreen, if it's a moisturizer, if it's a tinted sunscreen or if you'd like all three.

Navigating Foundations for Hot Weather

After my cleansing and Boum-Bouming, I've chosen Summer Friday’s Sheer Skin Tint – Light Coverage. It is one of my summer favorites. This skin tint works for anyone looking for minimal coverage that won't cake or settle into fine lines. I apply it using a BK Beauty foundation brush for an even and natural-looking skin tone that feels light and breathable. Choosing the right shade is crucial, and I recommend testing a few different ones to find your perfect match. I'm a shade 3 or 4, depending on how much St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Water Mist I've used.

Application Techniques for a Seamless Finish

I shake that bottle of sheer skin tint, put a large pea size on the back of my hand and load it up with my BK Beauty brush, two dots across the forehead, on either side of the nostrils, and on the chin. After I’m done, dotting and spreading across the T-Zone, (it has a very nice “slip” to it) whatever is left on the brush I feather out to the sides and down the neck. This method helps achieve coverage where most needed without over-applying.

Blending Tips for a Natural Look

Blending is crucial for avoiding a heavy makeup look. Ensure you blend well along your jawline and neck to avoid any lines of demarcation. Using the leftover product on your brush for these areas can create a more cohesive and natural appearance.

Advanced Tips for Long-lasting Wear

Setting your makeup with a setting spray can prevent it from shifting or fading, which is especially useful in hot or humid conditions. Powder is just too much unless you have the very lightest hand and only in certain areas.
